Andrew Goddard "Tidal Flats"

“Andrew Goddard’s oil paintings are of the tidal mud flats of the river Yar in the Isle of Wight. He has painted this area for more than 10 years. The area’s transient geographical state; the constant flux of water and land, acts as a metaphor for the process of painting itself.”

“A Beautiful South… profiles artists who make work about the land and coast of Southern England, from Romney March to Dorset and the Isle of Wight, and how it has been shaped by mankind and time.
… The artists in this exhibition all base their practice in observational research yet their chosen locations are emotional boundaries, landmarks and territories. Natural, cultural and mythical elements as well as romantic and historical associations of landscape traditions are present throughout, making this exhibition both insightful and alluring, and promoting appreciation of and access to the beautiful and intriguing landscapes of Southern England.”

England’s Dreaming
7 Bedford Row

Curated by Andrew Goddard
Contributing artists: Andrew Goddard, Caroline List, Karen Douglas, Stephen Walter, Nick Goss, Isobel Young, Julian Perry
May - July 2006

This show’s purpose is to represent the range and depth of painting and drawing which uses the landscape as a context to express life in the UK today.
“The Artists represent the complex relationship we have to the land we live in.
In this show we have the two endpoints of England - the North ( Newcastle and the Northumbrian coast where the traces of coal mining are still present, to the South, the South coast, and Eastwards into Essex - London’s past.
As the ground is literally eaten up from under our feet by the demands of people, transport and commerce the sense of loss is palpable. These works are statements of yearning, memory and loss.
Nevertheless it is still the landscape that offers the potential for dreaming.
